Professor Xu Xianong was the founder of the NPU’s helicopter engineering discipline and chief designer of the
helicopter beginning in 1958; the design was influenced by the American Sikorsky R-6. The Y-2A project was canceled because of performance issues in 1960.
The model was powered by a Soviet airplane engine which was insufficient to effectively lift the aircraft.
