In 1999 the Italian Army began converting A129s to the "Combat" (CBT) configuration. The A129CBT provides a greater range of armament than the A129, including TOW and AGM-114 Hellfire anti-armor missiles, Mistral/AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles, and mixed-use rockets. Avionics and fire control electronics were also upgraded. Performance was also enhanced by addition of a new five-bladed main rotor and improved transmission.
